Another birthday passed last month for my second and last baby. It’s amazing how fast this time has passed. I can still remember the feeling of him as a baby…..all squishy, floppy, and “flubbery” as my daughter would say.
Now, he has his first wiggly tooth, he has really well-established friendships and preferences. He’s an amazing foodie! The things this kid eats blows my mind. He can taste things that would be difficult for an adult to pinpoint and loves it all.
He’s a great kitchen helper, dog trainer, roller skater, marker artist. He’s a math whiz who LOVES doing his math homework.
He is the most generous kid I’ve known. When he gets a treat at school or at a birthday party, he eats half and wraps the rest in a tissue so he can give it to his sister when he sees her. He gives away his toys to his friends. At our school fair, children make and sell things to each other to raise money for the school. This year, he used a big chunk of his own money to buy 12 “art pieces” from a friend because no one else was buying his stuff and he was sad.
He’s reading everything he sees! This is such an amazing transition to witness. The world is changing so much for a child when they get to this point. He doesn’t have to ask his sister what’s in the cereal box, or what the sign says out his car window. It’s even harder to get him to focus on conversations now because he’s looking around to see what everything says. He’s constantly shouting out, “Do not enter!”, “Speed Limit 55!”, “Capital of Texas Highway!”. It’s a little disconcerting sometimes, but also exciting to see him so amazed with the world. It’s like being a baby all over again, learning to explore the world using a different sense altogether.
I love this kid so much. He’s taught me so much about what being a parent is all about. He lives in each moment, does everything big. Happy birthday, Daniel, 3 weeks late.
