Being a Mother is playing, nursing, wiping noses, comforting, snuggling to sleep, feeding, teaching, shuttling, remembering, mistaking, packing, listening, quieting, redirecting, surprising, cleaning, walking, standing, dancing, singing, honoring, coping, and letting go.
Being a Mother is doing these things and more for someone we love, for someone who can’t do these things for themselves……yet. Being a Mother means sometimes being able to put aside our needs for those of another. It’s selfless, but also selfful.
because
Being a Mother is also doing these things for ME. It’s not about sacrifice or losing my identity. It’s becoming more myself than I’ve ever been. It’s gathering, uncovering, and hearing instincts I didn’t know I had. It’s becoming fully aware of the power and magic in my body. It’s discovering how unlimited and deep love can be. It’s getting to re-experience the wonder of childhood. It’s truly understanding that control is a mirage but that I don’t actually want it. It’s realizing that some part of me will live on. It may not be with my DNA or my words, but it will be in the everyday love that helps my children become who they will be in the world.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there. It is truly something to celebrate and honor. I honor you.
